Lawrence Arms

Buttsweat and Tears

December 8th, 2009 · post by Fred Goodsell · 1 Comment

I remember listening to The Lawrence Arms last full length album ‘Oh! Calcutta!’ for the first time in a record shop and being blown away. Previously I had considered them to be just another ‘Fat Wreck Chords’ band with mid pass drums and repetitive harmonies but this album was something different. It soon became a personal favorite from the melodic punk genre and received almost constant play. That was 2006.

Buttsweat and tears comes after three years of silence from the band whilst members worked on other projects including singer and guitarist Chris McCaughan’s solo project Sundowner.

I can’t say I’m not a little disappointed. With only four tracks presented here I would have hoped they would each be absolute scorchers. Better to come back with a bang then a meek ‘hey remember us?’. But no such luck.

In all honesty this is far from being their weakest material and die hard Lawrence Arms fans will probably be happy with what they’ve got. But there are no real stand out tracks. Maybe they’re just saving them for the next full length?

In all not Lawrence Arms an either their best or worst but certainly not the songs they will be remembered for.

…but on the plus side, Lawrence Arms have such an amazing back catalogue, an EP is good enough for me right now!
I have to give it more listening, but so far I like it. I really hope the release might pre-empt another tour.
