For those of you not familiar with ‘the bomb’, brain-child of Jeff Rosenstock (ex-Arrogant Sons Of Bitches) they’ve putting out a crazy mix of experimental ska-punk for the last few years, all free for download on their website. An amazing live show and awesome songs have gained them quite a reputation, so I donated my $5 and downloaded the new album Scrambles from their website.

The words ‘mature’ and ‘thoughtful’ sit up and beg to be used, but wouldn’t be quite right. The songs are still fast and ska fuelled, but songs like Fresh Attitude, Young Body and Wednesday Night Drinkball really slow the album down in a way the bomb have never done before, and that amount of piano in a rock song plead for a comparison to Meat Loaf. But there are still some outstanding tracks that will put a smile on any ska-punk fan’s face, especially (Shut) Up The Punx!!!, complete with the great lyrics we’ve come to expect over the years.

It’s a good album, although maybe not up to the heady levels of To Live Or Die In Long Island or Goodbye Cool World, and when you can get the album for, err, NOTHING (although people who donate get laid more) you can’t really complain. Don’t just sit there, go and check it out for yourself!
