Reel Big Fish

This was my first outing to the ‘HMV’ Forum, and I’m sad to report that not much has changed: the bar is still overpriced, the toilets scuzzy, and the sound awful. However this wasn’t going to put a dampener on my night.

Broadway Calls

Formalities first: apologies for the terribleness of this review, and only actually covering one band. I was feeling pretty ill and so headed home before either The Audition or Alkaline Trio had played.
I was gutted to have missed Broadway Calls earlier on their tour in Kingston, as their S/T CD is pretty much constantly blaring [...]

Brighton Zine Fest

Edd, one of the founders of the London Zine Symposium and Last Hours zine, traveled down to the debut Brighton Zine Fest this year to help run a workshop on the Saturday and to have a stall on the Sunday; though most of all he went to have fun! What follows is a personal account of the event.

Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg sips tea from a cup that has ‘I Keep Faith’ written on it. Keeping faith, it seems, is the theme for the evening from this very English folk singer – who could also easily be described as a punk, a pop singer, an activist and a rock and roll star.

It’s the last of three nights in a row that London’s Astoria has played host to the Californian punk legends. There’s an air of anticipation, celebration and a distinct feeling of no one wanting it to be over, as the crowd sing, dance and punch the air with almost constant fervour throughout the set.

First of all, I have to apologise for what a messy review this will be in advance. To me, the Fest was a hazy experience of food, drink, and fun as much as it was about the music. So here’s a quick rundown of what the weekend entailed for me…
For all of those new to [...]

Reggae for the People tour

At: ULU

Tucked away in the back streets of central London is the little gem of ULU, a place I hadn’t been before tonight, which was set to stage a very special gig. This was the penultimate night of the ‘Reggae for the People’ tour, organised by the Rockers Revolt label, and featuring a blinding line-up.
At 7.45 [...]

Do The Dog 12th Birthday, mark II

posted June 8th, 2008 · posted by jas · marked as: Live reviews · Reviews

SkaNights runs a monthly gig/club at the Rhythm Factory on the first Saturday every month (saying it between every band really did make me remember it!). Last month was the Do The Dog birthday bash, and this month is… the Do The Dog birthday bash. I’m not complaining, the label has so many new bands [...]

Review by Andrew Sibley
Arriving at 7 I thought we’d be in time to catch at least some of Ill Scarlett, but as soon as we’d bought a drink we were confronted by Pepper bouncing onto the stage. They sound something like Pennywise trying to play speedy ska interspersed with some mid-paced dub, with lyrical ‘highlights’ [...]

State Radio

It’s 9.30 at the weird venue that is King’s College. I can’t shake the feeling we are on the fourth floor, and someone has just pulled the blinds back and revealed it’s still light outside. The smoke machines are making it feel like a school disco, an image shattered only by the people wandering back [...]
