Taking over the streets of Athens

Photos from the Greek general strike today, as tens of thousands of trade unionists and anti-capitalists demonstrated, bringing the centre of Athens to a standstill. The protest was perhaps twice the size of the one during the general strike of 24 February. Many locals compared it to the mass action in 2001 which defeated a government attempt to cut pensions.

A subdued welcome to NATO

On Friday the NATO Welcoming Committee demonstration gave NATO – an intergovernmental military alliance between European and North American states – a subdued welcome message. About 60 people converged on Edinburgh to take part in the Smash NATO demonstration, which had called for autonomous action against the meeting of NATO members during the day.

Disarm DSEi 2009 timeline

Put People First G20 photos

Today about 30-40,000 people marched through London as part of the G20 Put People First march. There was a large ‘militant workers bloc’, which formed with over 600 people marching behind the banner ‘Direct action… against redundancies and repossessions’.

Gaza solidarity demonstration photos

Yesterday – 10th January 2009 – on the Palestinian solidarity demonstration the crowd stopped outside the entrance to Kensington Palace Gardens on Bayswater Road at about 3pm. It seemed to be an attempt to get to the Israeli Embassy from behind – and where there was a very thin police presence. Below is a photo report of what happened.
