L’Étranger

February 3rd, 2011 · post by Edd · 2 Comments

These were some illustrations (and cover concept) that I put together for a competition that the Folio society and House of Illustration just had.

The funeral procession travelling to town for the funeral. Peréz, Meursault's mother's grieving companion, cuts across the fields to keep up, 'Great tears of frustration and anguish were streaming down his cheek But because of all his wrinkles they didn't run off.' (p.22) Shows the landscape and dirt Camus describes over the previous and preceding pages.

Raymond Santés, one of Meursault's neighbours, invites him in for food describing the fight he had with the man on the tram and his bruised fist, before asking Meursault to write a letter to his ex-mistress

Céleste, the owner of a restaurant Meursault frequented, gives evidence at the trial. 'Celeste was revolving a panama hat in his hands and every now and then he'd throw a glance in my direction… I don't think he'd been able to get his collar on because he only had a brass stud holding his shirt together.'

The proposed binding for the book

My sister gave me a copy of L’Étranger a couple of years ago to improve my French, and it turned into one of my favourite books, so it was fun to have a chance to respond to it. As usual though I felt like the deadline crept on me really quickly (made worse by the fact that I was doing it over Christmas between the obligatory fun of chocolate and alcohol!); still I’m happy with some of the ink textures happening, especially in the plotting image.

Fabulous illustrations! Worthy of such an important novella.
