Nemi II

April 26th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: Book reviews · Reviews

A collection of those Nemi comics that Londoners see every morning in the Metro, you know the ones revolving around the goth girl acting irrationally at the whims and foibles of life.

Bomb the music industry – Scrambles

April 24th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

For those of you not familiar with ‘the bomb’, brain-child of Jeff Rosenstock (ex-Arrogant Sons Of Bitches) they’ve putting out a crazy mix of experimental ska-punk for the last few years, all free for download on their website. An amazing live show and awesome songs have gained them quite a reputation, so I donated my $5 and downloaded the new album Scrambles from their website.

Hello Bastards/Soro/Spectra Hawk – Split

April 23rd, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Well, today we have Soro. In the best traditions of crust it is slow and heavy with a soupcon of death-metal in the vocals. It is a large portion (9 or 10 minutes each), unfortunately the chef seems to have rushed the production a little as it leaves somewhat to be desired. Something else maybe?

Git Some

April 10th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

I made the mistake of reading Git Some’s press release before listening to the CD, which explained the ex-Planes Mistaken For Stars chaps smoke a lot of weed and play in a Christian rock band on Sundays. Therefore, I expected a slow paced, self-indulgent Creed style band. Boy, was I wrong.

Hesus Attor

April 8th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Let me start by saying I’m quite the fan of esoteric and weird music; strange instruments, odd time signatures and nonsensical lyrics are great, but this album had me more than once face in hands muttering to myself ‘whatthefuck, whatthefuck whatthefuck’. It is quite simply the strangest album I’ve ever heard; as if SiKTH decided to let their hair down and be really odd. But let me break it down for you…

Ceremony

March 27th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

To cut to the chase, Ceremony play 80s hardcore harder, heavier and faster than anyone did 25 years ago, and they do it pretty well.

Astpai / Attack! Vipers!

January 30th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

To those of you who already know and love Attack! Vipers! and Astpai, this split does exactly what it says on the tin; eight tracks, including one Nerve Agents cover by Astpai, all in the excellent hardcore stylings we’ve come to expect from these two bands.
For those of you have been unlucky enough to miss [...]

The Riot Before

January 28th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Long story short, I was stuck in New Zealand for five months with only about four CDs, one of which was The Riot Before’s previous EP, ‘So Long The Lighthouse’. Fortunately it was amazing, so I jumped on their new album like a junkie on his next fix.
They’ve evolved from the lead singer’s original acoustic [...]

La Dispute

January 28th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

I’ll cut to the chase, this is an amazing record, a bit of a grower but none the less amazing. I guess the simplest description would be tech-hardcore, but those kind of pigeon-holing are always clumsy and inaccurate; they sound similar to At The Drive-In in places, but heavier, with pretty Minus The Bear moments [...]

Painted Bird

January 27th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

To a certain kind of dribbling weirdo (me) the term math-punk excites almost as much excitement and frantic thigh rubbing as ‘national free falafel day’; so it’s fair to say I played this EP expecting great things. If you’ve never come across ‘micro-genre’ of math-punk before don’t feel ignorant, there’s only one other band, NoMeansNo, [...]
