Its the same old story, recorded in a living room for next to nothing, given away free, but where, in some cases, DIY culture has become a selling point, it is almost the very essence of this band, think a Sam Russo style sound and you wouldn’t be too far wrong.
The first set of bands playing this years ‘The Fest’ in Gainesville, Florida have been officially announced.
I first discovered Squab, who are the acoustic incarnation of London based ’skunk rock’ pioneers ‘Claypigeon’, at a house show whilst they were on tour with Neil Sutherland. They’ve always struck me as an interesting proposition. Two guitars, two voices and the best beatboxer in the UK, playing music that lies somewhere between hip hop, ska and punk rock. Sounds novel, and on paper, shouldn’t work, right?
Being the new project from Aaron Scott, former front man of De La Hoya and Marathon, ‘Attica! Attica!’ was a name that I had heard on numerous occasions, but hadn’t had the opportunity to check out for myself. Having gone through a period of being one of my favourite bands, I hoped this CD would sound similar to De La Hoya; however, my hopes missed the mark spectacularly.
On Sunday morning I awoke expecting a much more chilled out day than the two that came before. I had no plans of chasing bands between stages and had no real schedule to fulfill, as long as I managed to catch Madness and Brand New i’d be okay, was the general consensus floating around my head.
I woke up on Saturday knowing one thing, it would be the day I finally saw The Boss live, I just knew I’d have to get through another day of brilliant music before I saw him though, or so I thought.
Different people approach things in very different ways, and can have highly divergent experiences whilst, pretty much, doing the same thing. This was to become a theme of, if not a lesson learned from my weekend at Glastonbury 2009, and one that began to manifest itself up to a week before the festival started.
My first experience of Austin Lucas was in a crowded hotel room in Gainesville, Florida during the Fest, last October. I was blown away by his voice.
I didn’t know Bridge and Tunnel’s music particularly well, but they had blown me away at the Fest last October, based on my previous experience and his enthusiasm, I knew that anyone who came to this show was in for a treat.
Folk Punk heroes, Against Me! are set to release ‘The Original Cowboy’ on July 7th 2009 through Fat Wreck Chords.
