La Dispute

January 28th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

I’ll cut to the chase, this is an amazing record, a bit of a grower but none the less amazing. I guess the simplest description would be tech-hardcore, but those kind of pigeon-holing are always clumsy and inaccurate; they sound similar to At The Drive-In in places, but heavier, with pretty Minus The Bear moments [...]

Painted Bird

January 27th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

To a certain kind of dribbling weirdo (me) the term math-punk excites almost as much excitement and frantic thigh rubbing as ‘national free falafel day’; so it’s fair to say I played this EP expecting great things. If you’ve never come across ‘micro-genre’ of math-punk before don’t feel ignorant, there’s only one other band, NoMeansNo, [...]

John Player Specials

January 27th, 2009 · posted by jas · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Something about this CD reminds me of the music that I was listening to loads around 5 years ago. As soon as the first track kicks in, I’m transported back to the Underworld watching Rebelation, Splitters, The Scrub, Duff Muffin and other bands of that ilk. And I guess that’s what this band kind of [...]

Dillinger Four

January 27th, 2009 · posted by Fred Goodsell · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Like so much of the music that passed through my ears in the early 21st century, i first became aware of Dillinger Four via the aid of a Fat Wreck compilation. After hearing the instantly addictive chorus to their tune ‘!Noble Stabbings!’ I went on to discover their thoroughly solid back catalogue and became a [...]

No Idea

January 26th, 2009 · posted by jas · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

My main memory of this CD is driving around somewhere in Orlando from strip-mall to strip-mall looking for a good one, while playing this loud. We were all sat in the backseat, geeking out over our schedules of who we were going to see the coming weekend. Pretty much every track that came on, someone [...]

Overthrow

January 26th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

Overthrow are a four piece punk/rock/reggae band from Guildford and ‘So Much Power, So Little Time’ is their second self-released offering after a 16 date Brighton to Dundee tour. They compare themselves to “Sublime, RX Bandits, Foo Fighters and The Police”. This does not however reflect their pop-punk leanings, and there’s a healthy dose of [...]

Glass & Ashes

January 26th, 2009 · posted by Chris Walktall · marked as: CD reviews · Reviews

I was lucky enough to pick up a copy of Glass & Ashes first offering ‘Aesthetic Arrest’ and loved it, so I pressed play expecting great things and was not disappointed.
If you aren’t lucky enough to have come upon them before, G&A are a hardcore-punk (I’ve also heard them called emo-core and DC-influenced-post-hardcore but let’s [...]
